Oracle's Offerings
In the dark recesses of a mountain cave a match strikes and brings to life a humble altar — a collection of nature’s treasures. Spirit is heavy in the place, and while the oracle places an offering of heady mugwort amidst the stones and bones, she drones a low chant and calls upon the ancients for guidance. Almost unconsciously, she reaches for a card from the deck. They’re counting on her — she who is so connected to the rivers and trees and skies, to the spirits of stones and swifts and wildfire ash. Outside, the rain begins to fall quietly as she turns the card over, revealing the answer to the question that has burned so long in all their hearts. Somehow, she is not surprised at what has presented itself. Above, an eagle screeches. Beneath her feet a shrew skitters. She comes to and prepares for the voyage back to the village, repeating the name of the card aloud. Before she leaves, she gives gratitude to the gods and they in turn, through a mysterious twist of smoky tendrils, send a message of praise for the Oracle’s Offerings.
